Variable Measures

Variable Measure

Variable Measures are a measure type that allows users to set up simple disaggregated measures that will be used to track the individual data points that make up an aggregate total. Variable Measures are added to a measure to make up the calculation of the measure that will calculate the total aggregated across all of the variable measures. In order for Variable Measures to be added to a measure the measure will need to be a calculated measure and the variable measures that will be included in a measure calculation will need to share the same reporting frequency as the measure.

Accessing Variable Measures

Variable measures can be found by going to the top navigation option for "Objects" and then clicking on "Measures" and "Variables".

Creating Variable Measures

Once in the Variables search screen, users can either search for and existing variable or create a new one by clicking the "+Add New" button.

When creating a new Variable Measure the user can fill in a simplified set of properties for the measure.

Properties include:

  • Title
  • Tags
  • Frequency
  • Decimals (0-6)
  • Unit or Measure
  • Display Before
  • Definition

Parent Measures and Variable Measures

After the Variable Measures have been saved, the user can go back to the calculated parent measure where they would like to include the Variable Measure and they can use the "+ Variable" option to choose to search for an existing measure or to add a new measure.

In order to search for an existing Variable measure the user will need to select "Existing Variable" and they will then be able to use the popup window to search for Variable measures. When searching the users can search by the following criteria -

  • Tags
  • Title

Users can also determine the relationship they would like to add the Variable Measures under.

Users can choose between two options - Disaggregated Child, Comparee

Disaggregated - Child:

  • This options will add measures to the "Disaggregated Measures that are used to calculate this Measure" section of the parent measure to be included in the measure's calculation.

Comparee:

  • This option will allow the Variable Measures that are being added to displaying in the parent measure's graph.

Once the user has select the relationship, selected the check box next to each of the measures they want to add and has clicked the "Add" button, the Variable Measures will be added to the section determined by the Relationship option chosen. Variable Measures added under the "Disaggregated - Child" will display under the "Disaggregated Measures that are used to calculate this Measure"

Variable Measures added under the "Comparee" option for "Relationship" will display under the "Measures to Compare on Graph" section of the measure.

Viewing Disaggregated Measures in the Parent Measure Comparison Chart

The user can scroll to the top of the measure to view the graph and select "Show Comparison Chart" to see the Variable Measures displaying along with the parent measure's data in the graph.

Variable Measures cannot be set as a parent measure and will not produce graphs and charts. The Variable Measure must also have the same reporting frequency as the parent measure it will be included in. If the frequencies don't match then the user will not see the Variable Measure appear the in search results when they click "+Existing Variables".

Creating a Variable Measure from within a Parent Measure

Users that need to add Variable Measures while in a measure can select the "New Variable" option from the "+Variable" dropdown. When creating a Variable Measure from within a measure the user will have a simplified set of properties to fill in.

  • Title
  • Tags
  • Decimals (0-6)
  • Unit of Measure
  • Display Before
  • Add to Comparison (Yes/No)

The Variable Measure being created from within a measure will inherit the reporting "Frequency" value and the "Calculate Null Values as Zero" setting from the parent measure.

Variable Measures that are created from within a parent measure will display in the "Disaggregated Measures that are used to calculate this Measure" section as well as the "Measures to Compare on Graph" section if "Add to Comparison" is set to "Yes" when the Variable Measure is saved.
