# Viewing or Editing a Measure

*Note: For paid subscriptions, [variables](https://support.clearimpact.com/en/2023-variables?hsLang=en) are a no-cost measure alternative. Variables are designed for use as disaggregated (child) measures for [calculated (aggregated) measures](https://support.clearimpact.com/en/2023-creating-calculated-data-values-for-a-measure?hsLang=en). Variables contain data only - no notes, actions, or file attachments. As with measures, viewing and editing variables can be done from the **Variables** list (**Object / Measures / Variables**), or from within the calculated measures to which they are added.*

 

One way to view an indicator or performance measure is to start by [viewing a scorecard](https://support.clearimpact.com/en/2023-viewing-a-scorecard?hsLang=en) that contains the measure. Then click the measure name.

Or you can open the [**Indicators** list or **Performance Measures** list](https://support.clearimpact.com/en/2023-indicator-program-measure-or-variable-lists?hsLang=en), search for the measure you want to view, and click its name or **View** button.  (If you have long lists of measures, or your lists include multiple measures with similar or identical names, [tags](https://support.clearimpact.com/en/2023-tags?hsLang=en) enable you to filter your search.)

*Note: The rest of this article covers the editing options for indicators. Options for editing performance measures are identical.*

 

At the top left you can see the measure's reporting frequency, polarity, and whether the [data is entered manually](https://support.clearimpact.com/en/2023-entering-data-values-and-target-values-for-a-measure?hsLang=en) or [calculated](https://support.clearimpact.com/en/2023-creating-calculated-data-values-for-a-measure?hsLang=en). If this is a measure you’ll want to access often, clicking the star icon to the left of the measure name will mark the measure as a favorite. Favorite measures, as well as favorite scorecards, are listed on your [**Dashboard**](https://support.clearimpact.com/en/2023-dashboard?hsLang=en).

Along the top right are several measure options:

- **Edit:** Options to edit the measure’s basic properties, formatting or data properties, and view measure history
- **Export:** Export in Excel format, or display the measure in an exportable view
- **Share:** Get [**Embed** codes](https://support.clearimpact.com/en/2023-embedding-scorecards-and-scorecard-objects?hsLang=en) for sharing the measure on a site hosted by you or by Clear Impact
- **Add:** Options to [**Add Notes**](https://support.clearimpact.com/en/2023-adding-notes-to-scorecard-objects?hsLang=en), add the measure to a container, add an [aggregated or disaggregated measure](https://support.clearimpact.com/en/2023-creating-calculated-data-values-for-a-measure?hsLang=en), or add a [comparison measure](https://support.clearimpact.com/en/2023-trend-line-comparison-/-show-comparison-chart?hsLang=en)
- **Options:** View related [aggregated or disaggregated measures](https://support.clearimpact.com/en/2023-creating-calculated-data-values-for-a-measure?hsLang=en)

 

When editing the measure, there are four tabs along the left.

- **Basic Properties:** Name, [tags](https://support.clearimpact.com/en/2023-tags?hsLang=en), measure type, description
- **Formatting Properties:** Decimal places, units, polarity
- **Data Properties:** Data source, frequency, [calculation type](https://support.clearimpact.com/en/2023-creating-calculated-data-values-for-a-measure?hsLang=en) (if used), manual targets, substituting zero for null values
- **History:** Creation and modification dates

If you make any changes, be sure to click **Save**.

 

For measures that have data entered, the data graph appears below the measure name. Above the graph are several graph options;  the options that appear depend on data type and number of data points:

- **Sticky Chart:** Toggles the left side of the display to include only the graph, or the graph plus several tabs just below
- **Show Recent Data / Show All Data:** Displays the last few data points, or expands the graph to show all data
- **AI Assist:** If [enabled](https://support.clearimpact.com/en/2023-general-settings?hsLang=en), offers [data interpretation](https://support.clearimpact.com/en/ai-assist-for-data-interpretation?hsLang=en) (available when there are 10 or more data points)
- **Line / Bar:** Toggle between line and bar graph display (admin users can set the [default display](https://support.clearimpact.com/en/2023-graph-settings?hsLang=en))
- **Comparison:** If this measure has a [compared measure](https://support.clearimpact.com/en/2023-trend-line-comparison-/-show-comparison-chart?hsLang=en), you can display trend line or grouped comparison.
- **Edit:** [Add or edit measure data](https://support.clearimpact.com/en/2023-entering-data-values-and-target-values-for-a-measure?hsLang=en), [add or edit forecast values](https://support.clearimpact.com/en/2023-entering-forecast-values-for-a-measure?hsLang=en), or [edit graph settings](https://support.clearimpact.com/en/2023-graph-settings-and-color-bands?hsLang=en)
- **Aggregate:** For measures with less than annual frequency, there are options to show data aggregated annually and / or quarterly. This provides an at-a-glance view of the current year or quarter.

 

*Note: Users with admin permission can change the [default colors and line widths used in graphs](https://support.clearimpact.com/en/2023-graph-settings?hsLang=en).*

There are also options to print the graph in several formats.

Opening the **Data** tab displays a table of all data statistics, including average, mode, median, standard deviation sample, and standard deviation population.

Opening the **Notes** tab displays the note types configured as the default notes for the measure type. To [add a new note](https://support.clearimpact.com/en/2023-adding-notes-to-scorecard-objects?hsLang=en) to the result, in addition to the default notes already included, use the **Add / Notes** option.

*Note: Users with admin permission can configure the [default set of notes](https://support.clearimpact.com/en/2023-object-types?hsLang=en) included with each measure type. Admin users can also [edit system-defined notes or create new note types](https://support.clearimpact.com/en/2023-notes?hsLang=en).*

 

When adding a note, choose one of the standard note types in your system. You can fill in the note now or later, and when finished, click **Save**.

**Keep in mind:** Note completing is a contributing factor to a scorecard’s [engagement score](https://support.clearimpact.com/en/2023-scorecard-accountability-scoring?hsLang=en).

To complete, edit, or delete a note, click its **Edit** icon. Clicking a note’s **History** icon displays a chronological list of note additions and edits.

- **Relationships** lists all containers that use the measure, as well as [aggregated (parent) and disaggregated (child) measures](https://support.clearimpact.com/en/2023-creating-calculated-data-values-for-a-measure?hsLang=en), and [comparison measures](https://support.clearimpact.com/en/2023-trend-line-comparison-/-show-comparison-chart?hsLang=en).
